Brita Ball, PhD, helps improve food safety compliance and culture through coaching, training and consulting. She is a food safety specialist and accomplished facilitator and trainer. Her experience includes production, processing, inspection and auditing. Dr. Ball holds graduate degrees in food science and in adult learning and leadership. She has her own company that focuses on food safety culture, leadership development, employee engagement and behaviour change. Dr. Ball is past-Chair of the Food Safety Education PDG at the International Association for Food Protection and has been a faculty advisor for food safety graduate students at Michigan State University.

Alex Hanley is a food safety expert with over two decades in the food safety industry, most of those as a food safety auditor. He has a deep understanding of food safety management systems and food safety certification, with particular expertise in standards benchmarked to the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) such as BRC, SQF and FSSC22000. Alex understands what it takes to manage a plant every day and the many intersecting business imperatives a company may be facing. He has performed over 1,000 HACCP, quality system and food safety audits covering agriculture, meat, dairy, baking, seafood, processed foods and packaging material. Originally from Montreal, Alex has travelled the world designing, implementing and auditing best practices for manufacturers of every size and production level. Alex is Navigate’s founder and CEO. He is also our food safety coach as he designs and delivers our courses. His friendly and easy-to-understand approach helps food safety professionals learn at their pace in a comfortable environment.

Dr. Detwiler is a well-respected food safety academic, advisor, advocate, and author. For nearly 30 years, he has played a unique role in controlling foodborne illness. After losing his son, Riley, to E.coli in 1993, the Secretary of Agriculture invited Detwiler’s collaboration on consumer education. He was twice appointed to the USDA’s National Advisory Board on Meat and Poultry Inspection, represented consumers as the Senior Policy Coordinator for STOP Foodborne Illness, served on Conference for Food Protection councils, and supported the FDA’s implementation of FSMA. Today, Detwiler is a Professor of food policy and corporate social responsibility at Northeastern University, where his students have gone on to leadership positions in industry and in state and federal agencies.
